The mass outbreak of influenza in Beijing at the beginning of the year seems to have abated, according to figures released by the municipal health bureau.

"Since mid-January, cases of infectious diseases have been on the decline in Beijing," said a bureau official.

A report which monitored 122 central community hospitals across the capital said there were 1,989 cases of human flu on Jan. 29, compared with 6,620 cases on Jan. 10.
