Travelers to south China's Hainan province can now do their bit to help children living in poverty through the new "One More Kilogram" project organized by local travel agencies and scenic spots.
The program combines travel with a social conscience by asking visitors to pack a kilogram of books and stationery in their luggage and donate it to local kids as act of goodwill.
The new program has already received a lot of support. Dozens of visitors over the New Year holiday took stationery, books and sports equipment to a school near the Hainan Tropical Wildlife Park and Botanical Garden. They also stayed to play games with the students.
The travel agency that organized the trip said the "One More Kilogram" project is an informal activity designed to help local kids pursue their studies. The agency will regularly provide free air tickets to encourage more travelers to donate to the project.
