China appreciates Spain's adherence to the one-China policy, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said Thursday.
China noted the Spanish foreign ministry's communique on Taiwan's so-called "referendum legislation", and the Chinese side "highly appreciates it", Zhang said.
The Spanish foreign ministry on Tuesday issued a short communique of four points stating that the legislative approval for holding a referendum in Taiwan had been a serious mistake which should have been avoided.
It also said Spain hoped the move would not foster "Taiwan independence" and stressed the need to peacefully resolve any dispute that might arise from the issue.
Zhang said Spain's action would help enhance mutual understanding between China and Spain, and promote friendly cooperation.
