China on Tuesday praised the decision of the UN to reject Taiwan authorities' latest application to join the international body, adding it reflected the UN's adherence to the one-China policy.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao made the remarks in a statement following the UN's rejection of Taiwan authorities' application for UN membership under the name of Taiwan.

"The decision was made in accordance with the UN Charter and Resolution 2758 of the UN General Assembly, and showed the UN and its member states' universal adherence to the one-China principle," Liu said.

Resolution 2758 was adopted at the 26th session of the UN General Assembly On Oct. 25, 1971, which decided to transfer China's seat in the United Nations to the government of the People's Republic of China.

"We believe the Chinese government and people will continue to win understanding and support from the UN and its member states in our righteous cause of safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity," the spokesman said.

The UN Secretariat announced on Monday it had rejected and returned Taiwan authorities' application letter for UN membership.
