Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday encouraged exchanges between the Chinese and Spanish companies when he met with Spanish King Juan Carlos I.

"China and Spain still have great potential for economic and trade cooperation although they have already made remarkable achievements in this regard," Wen said.

He suggested the two countries improve business contacts, as well as trade structures, and enhance cooperation on new energy resources, environmental protection, finance, shipping, and tourism.

Wen appreciated the adherence of Spain on one-China policy.

He said Spain was an important partner of China in southern Europe, and the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership demonstrated the close relationship.

The King Juan Carlos I voiced the hope to expand economic and trade cooperation, especially in the areas of investment and energy resources, and promote culture, media and personnel exchanges.

The Spanish King arrived in Beijing on Sunday for a six-day state visit, which coincides with the ongoing "Year of Spain in China."

Premier Wen on Wednesday also met with members of the International Advisory Committee of the China Banking Regulatory Commission.
