The Foreign Ministry said on Saturday the situation in Myanmar has not posed threat to regional and international peace and security.

 

"Myanmar's neighboring countries and most members of the international community believe the situation in Myanmar has not posed threat to regional and international peace and security," ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said.

 

"If the UN Security Council passed a resolution on the Myanmar issue, it would go beyond the responsibilities of the Security Council laid out in the UN Charter and harm the role and authority of the Security Council," he added.

 

Liu's comments came after China on Saturday voted against a UN draft resolution which intends to cast further pressure on Myanmar for its political, economic and social problems.

 

Among the 15 UN Security Council members, China, Russia and South Africa voted against the draft resolution.

 

Liu said it is in the interests of Myanmar and the international community to realize political stability, national harmony and economic development in Myanmar.

 

He said China will continue to play a constructive role in supporting the mediation efforts of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the UN Secretary General.

 

"Hopefully Myanmar will step up cooperation with the international community," Liu said.
