Chinese Embassy Staff in Indonesia Inspect Quake Area

Chinese Embassy in Indonesia Sunday sent two staff members to earthquake-affected Yogyakarta and Central Java Province, Indonesia, to investigate the development of the disaster, especially the conditions of Chinese people working or studying there.

 

According to a spokesman of the Chinese Embassy, the staff members arrived at Yogyakarta, about 440 km east of Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, on Sunday noon and met with local officials and people there to seek help for whereabouts and conditions of Chinese people staying in the area.

 

He said that there has no report of casualties of Chinese people so far in the area with the earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale on Saturday morning.

 

The earthquake has killed more than 4,000 people in Yogyakarta and the surroundings, injured thousands of others and left tens of thousands homeless.

 

Australia, China, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States have sent humanitarian assistance for the quake victims.
