Shenzhen's permanent population reached 8.27 million by November 1, 2005, growing 17.99 percent from 2000, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
The city, which borders Hong Kong, carried out a spot check on 3.06 percent of its residents for its 6th national population census.
Among the permanent residents, who have lived in the city for more than 6 months, about 4.2 million are males and 4.06 million are females.
About 1.05 million people have a bachelor degree as their highest level of education, 1.95 million have a senior high school education, and 3.9 million have a junior high school education.
At present, Shenzhen's population density is 4,239 people per square kilometers, growing by 642 from 2000.
