Adjust font size:

Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) on Monday donated US$50,000 to its Indonesian counterpart to provide relief for Saturday's earthquake.

The fund has been handed over to the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta for delivery to the Red Cross Society of Indonesia, said the RCSC.

It has also sent a condolence message on behalf of the vice president of RCSC Jiang Yiman.

Meanwhile, a 44-member emergency rescue team left Beijing Monday afternoon for Indonesia, carrying five tons of medical rescue materials.

An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale rocked Indonesia's province of Yogyakarta and several parts of central Java at 05:55 AM local time on Saturday morning (22:55 GMT Friday).

The death toll has reached 5,136, more than 10,000 people have been injured and at least 200,000 people are homeless.

The Chinese government has offered US$2 million to Indonesia and is thinking of providing more relief staff and materials to the affected area.
