Zhuhai Film Festival
Established in 1994 by the Zhuhai municipal government, the festival was called the China Zhuhai, Two Sides of the Taiwan Strait and Hong Kong Film Festival in its first year. Zhuhai Film Festival is aimed at enhancing communication and cooperation between the mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao in filmmaking. Targeted at being an international Chinese film festival, it absorbs many competition films made by overseas Chinese year by year.
Changchun Film Festival
Established in 1992 and authorized by the Ministry of Radio, Cinema, and Television, it is a biennial international film festival. Changchun film festival is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Radio, Cinema, and Television, and the provincial government of Jinlin as well as municipal government of Changchun city.
Shanghai International Film Festival
Established in 1993 and held every two years, the festival is sponsored by Shanghai municipal government and undertaken by the organization committee of the festival. Primary activities include competition films, non-competition films, various featured film exhibition, art symposium and film business.
Beijing University Students' Film Festival
As the first and only film festival in China that originated with and established and organized by university students, Beijing University Students' Film Festival was founded in 1993. The final prize winning movies are appraised and selected by university students. The festival sites are usually in Tsinghua University and Beijing Normal University.
Taipei Golden Horse Film Awards
Established in 1962 and sponsored by the Taiwan Film Industry Development Foundation, the award is the most important activity in Taiwan's film industry. The annual film festival was mainly targeted at local films and extended to Hong Kong and mainland China in the 1990s. Today it's been an annual award ceremony for films made in Chinese all over the world.
Hong Kong Film Awards
The "Hong Kong Film Awards" was founded in 1982 by the Film Biweekly (a local magazine). It only offered five awards in the first year including Top Ten Chinese Films and Best Foreign Film. Every year several awards were added and since the 17th Hong Kong Film Festival, 16 awards have been established. It is the most authoritative film activity in Hong Kong's film industry and is regarded as HK's Oscar.
Huabiao Awards
Established in 1957, the predecessor of these awards was the Ministry of Culture Excellence Film awards. The award was suspended between 1958 and 1979. It resumed in 1979 and has been held every year since then. After the Film Administration of Ministry of Culture was transferred to the Ministry of Radio, Cinema and Television, its name was changed to the Ministry of Radio, Cinema and Television Excellent Film Awards. It adopted the name "Huabiao Awards" (Palace Columns Awards) from 1994.
Golden Rooster Awards
Established in 1981 by the Association of Chinese Filmmakers, the award is so named because 1981, according to traditional Chinese calendar, was the year of the rooster. The yearly awards are decided by a special committee composed of film experts.
A Hundred Flowers Awards
Established in 1962 by Popular Cinema (Dazhong dianying) magazine, the award was suspended between 1964 and 1979 due to the Cultural Revolution. It resumed in 1980 and is held every year since then. The yearly awards are decided by the number of votes submitted by the general public.
