The average disposable income of per-capita urban resident rose from 6,860 yuan in 2001 to 10,493 yuan in 2005, an average annual increase of 9.6 percent; while the average net income of per-capita rural resident rose from 2,366 to 3,255 yuan, with an average annual growth of 5.3 percent.
Higher incomes are reflected in bank savings. In 1952 residents' savings deposits amounted to 860 million yuan, growing to 21.06 billion yuan in 1978. In the 20 years since the start of of reform and opening-up, personal savings deposits increased in geometric progression.Between 1979 and 1986, the balance of savings deposits increased 10-fold, reaching 223.85 billion yuan, this figure rising to 2,151.88 billion yuan in 1994. In short, within the space of 16 years, savings deposits increased 100-fold. In 2005, the figure was 14,105.1 billion yuan, or 670 times the 1978 figure. Personal foreign exchange deposits, stocks, bonds, internal stocks, and cash have all grown by a large margin.
