Excessive Commodities Packaging Has to "Be Banted": CPPCC Member

A member of China's top advisory body warned Wednesday against excessive commodities packaging, which he cited as another source of environmental pollution and have to "be banted" and greatly reduced.

Decent, appropriate packaging facilitate sales of goods, whereas excessive and even fraudulent packaging could lead to a waste of resources and cause serious environmental pollution hazards, said Li Yafang, a member of the 10th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

She enumerated statistics from environmental sanitation departments that more than 70 percent of the garbage from packaging industry could have been reduced. At present, garbage originated from packaging made up more than 20 percent of the household rubbish in the country.

Meanwhile, Li set forth a proposal for formulating law and regulations on the packaging of commodities in a bid to conserve and save natural resources, lessen environmental pollution and ban fraudulent packaging methods.
