CPC Congress Closes with New Central Committee Elected

The week-long 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) ended in the Great Hall of the People Thursday morning after delegates to the congress elected by secret ballot a new Party Central Committee and fulfilled other items on the agenda.

Jiang Zemin and five of his colleagues at the 7-member Political Bureau Standing Committee of the 15th CPC Central Committee, namely Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Wei Jianxing and Li Lanqing, didn't stand for the elections, while 59-year-old Hu Jintao has entered the 16th CPC Central Committee.

The 16th CPC Central Committee is composed of 198 full and 158 alternate members, with new faces making up more than half, official sources said, adding that more than 20 percent of those on the lists are under the age of 50.

The delegates also elected a 121-member Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) at the closing session.

The congress adopted three resolutions on the report of the 15th CPC Central Committee, the work report of the CCDI and an amendment to the Constitution of the CPC, respectively.

The important thought of Three Representatives is written into the CPC Constitution in line with the amendment.

Jiang Zemin presided over Thursday's closing session.

The congress, the first of its kind convened by the Party in the new century, is of great importance at a time when China enters the third phase of its modernization program.
