Preparatory Meeting of 16th CPC National Congress Held

The preparatory meeting of the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was held in the Great Hall of the People Thursday afternoon.

Jiang Zemin presided over the meeting attended by 2,118 delegates.

A total of 2,114 delegates to the 16th Party Congress have been elected and another 40 delegates have been specially invited by the CPC Central Committee.

A 24-member delegate credentials committee was approved by a show of hands at the meeting. A presidium of the congress consisting of 236 members was approved. Hu Jintao was approved as the secretary-general of the congress.

Those attending the meeting also approved the tasks of the secretariat of the congress and its organizational setup.

The following agenda for the 16th CPC National Congress was adopted at the meeting:

-- Hear and examine the report of the 15th CPC Central Committee;

-- Examine the work report of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection;

-- Deliberate and pass a draft amendment to the Constitution of the Communist Party of China;

-- Elect the 16th CPC Central Committee;

-- Elect a new Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.
