In the spring and summer 1989, under the influence of the international and domestic climate, a small group exploited the student unrest to stage an anti-Party, anti-socialist political turmoil, which later evolved into a counterrevolutionary rebellion in Beijing. The CPC Central Committee and the State Council resolutely curbed the turmoil and quell the rebellion. Li Peng and Yang Shangkun are shown here speaking at a meeting of cadres from the Party, government and army in Beijing on May 19.
