The spirit of independence, self-reliance and hard struggle gave impetus to industrial production. During the first half of the 1960s, the Party and government invested a great deal of manpower and material and financial resources in developing the Daqing Oilfield in the Songhuajiang-Liaohe Basin in Heilongjiang Province. By 1965, China had basically achieved self-sufficiency in oil. People in Daqing are shown here at work.
