On January 8, 1976, Zhou Enlai passed away. The people of the whole country mourned the death of the premier. In April, the Tiananmen Incident took place in Beijing, marking the high tide of a massive protest movement against the “gang of four”. The incident was also an indication of strong support for the correct leadership of the Party as represented by Deng Xiaoping. It laid a foundation for the subsequent fall of the “gang of four.”
