Wu Bangguo (1941- ), native of Feidong County, Anhui Province.
Member of Political Bureau of 15th CPC Central Committee; vice premier of PRC State Council.
Wu joined the Communist Party of China in 1964 and went to Shanghai soon after graduating from the Radio Electronics Department of the prestigious Tsinghua University in 1967.
For many years, he worked in the Shanghai No. 3 Electronic Tube Factory as engineer, technical division chief, deputy Party secretary, deputy director and director, and later became deputy Party secretary of the Shanghai Meters, Instruments and Telecommunications Bureau.
In 1983, Wu Bangguo entered Shanghai's decision-making organ as Standing Committee member of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, serving concurrently as Party secretary in charge of the municipality's work on science and technology.
In 1985, he was promoted to Shanghai's deputy Party secretary to become a close aide of Jiang Zemin and Zhu Rongji.
After Zhu Rongji's transfer to Beijing in 1991, Wu succeeded him as Shanghai's Party Chief to become one of the youngest Party secretaries at the provincial level.
Wu Bangguo was elected member of Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee in 1992.
In 1994, Wu was transferred to Beijing to become member of the Political Bureau and member of Secretariat of CPC Central Committee. In 1995, he was nominated and confirmed as vice premier of the State Council while remaining in his Party posts in the CPC Central Committee.
Wu was reelected member of Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee in September 1997, and vice premier on March 18, 1998.
He made secretary of the Work Committee of Large Enterprises of CPC Central Committee, July 1998-1999; and vice chairman of Committee for Construction of Three Gorges Project under the State Council, May 1998.
He Appointed secretary of Working Committee of Enterprises of CPC Central Committee, Dec. 1999.
He was alternate member of 12th and 13th CPC Central Committees, and also member of 14th and 15th CPC Central Committees; member of Political Bureau of 14th CPC Central Committee; added to the membership of the Secretariat of CPC Central Committee at the 4th plenum of the 14th CPC Central Committee.
