Miami Vice Opens in China

Hollywood blockbuster Miami Vice will hit Chinese cinema screens on Wednesday. Its opening was delayed by a four week national campaign to promote home grown films celebrating China's revolutionary history during what was titled "Red October".

Miami Vice, starring Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx and Chinese actress Gong Li, will be closely followed by the debut of Oliver Stone's World Trade Center, on November 10, making it China's last imported movie of 2006.

Having previously starred in two Hollywood movies, China Box and Memoirs of a Geisha, Gong Li regarded Miami Vice as her first real Hollywood experience as the other two were mostly made by Asian film makers.

"Miami Vice was a true Hollywood production and it opened up my eyes to American film making and the country's film industry," Gong told Beijing Youth Daily.

In the film Gong Li plays Isabella, the sultry wife of a Latin American drugs baron and arms dealer, who embarks on a romance with a cop played by Colin Farrell.

"Isabella loves adventure," Gong said, "and I love adventure too. She has this power and strength which the director thinks I have too."

Gong Li also stars alongside Chow Yun-fat and Taiwanese pop sensation Jay Chou in Curse of the Golden Flower which will be showing in Chinese cinemas from December 14. Apparently the film revolves around Chinese imperial politics.
