The 24th International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) is
held in Beijing, with the participation of about 4,000 mathematicians
from over 100 countries. French mathematician Laurent Lafforgue and Russian
mathematician Vladimir Voevodsky share the Fields Medal, which is considered
the most distinguished international award in mathematics. The 2002 Nevanlinna
Prize, another renowned award in the mathematics community, is granted
to Indian mathematician Madhu Sudan.
25-27 U.S. Deputy
Secretary of State Richard Armitage visits China, where he declares that
the U.S. Government judges the "East Turkistan Islamic Movement"
(ETIM) as a terrorist organization.
29 China's first supercomputer,
super-computing-system Shenteng 1800, capable of making 1.05 trillion
calculations per second, makes its debut. Developed by Legend Group Corp.,
China's leading computer manufacturer, the supercomputer is installed
at the Mathematics and System Science Research Institute affiliated with
the Chinese Academy of Sciences. On November 15, the U.S. Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory (LBL) releases the latest list of the world's top
500 supercomputers and Shenteng 1800 ranks 43rd in terms of operation
speed.
