Governor of Yunnan Province

Xu Rongkai, a native from Chongqing Municipality, was born in February 1942. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1960, and graduated from the Dynamics Department of Tsinghua University in 1966.

Xu successively served as an engineer, deputy chief of Design Department of Sichuan Oriental Steam Turbine Plant, vice general manager of Sichuan Oriental Whole-set Equipment for Power Station Corporation, deputy head and head of Sichuan Provincial Light Industry Department.

He served as vice minister of light industry from August 1991 to 1993 and vice chairman of China National Light Industry Associations from 1993 to 1995.

He was vice director of the research office for the State Council from August 1995 to April 1998. In April 1998, he served as vice secretary-general of the State Council, and in June of the same year, he became a member of the Leading Group of National Science, Technology and Education.

Beginning in July 1998, he served as deputy director of the China National Ten-year Committee for International Disaster Reduction.

On May 31 2001, he was appointed deputy secretary of the CPC Yunnan Provincial Committee. On June 1 of the same year, he was appointed as vice governor and acting governor of Yunnan. On December 16, he was elected as member, standing committee member and deputy secretary of the CPC Yunnan Provincial Committee at the first session of the seventh CPC Yunnan Provincial Committee.

In January 2002, he was elected as governor of Yunnan at the fifth session of the ninth Yunnan People's Congress, and was re-elected to the same position in January 2003.

He is currently serving as a member of the 16th CPC Central Committee.
