Deputies of the Shanghai municipal committee of the National People's Congress and members of the municipal committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) have played an active role in conveying the concerns of local residents.
Members of the CPPCC municipal committee made 1,208 proposals in 2001. Of those, 22 percent focused on economic issues, 30 percent fell into the field of urban engineering construction and management and 21 percent into the field of education, science, public health and sports.
These proposals have been submitted to 130 government departments. By the end of last year, 99.2 percent of them had been settled.
Shanghai NPC municipal committee deputies were invited to discussions on many occasions last year to put forward the suggestions of local residents. They raised 686 proposals last year and all have been responded to by relevant government departments.
The municipal government took into consideration the opinions of local residents on their removal as a result of pulling down their original residence and revised the rules on the management of houses to be pulled down in urban districts, which protected the interests of residents to be removed.
