Families of the six middle school students trampled to death at a school in east China's Jiangxi Province will be given a total of 1.14 million yuan (about US$ 144,300) compensation.
The families of five of the victims received their compensation, 190,238 yuan per family on Tuesday, local government sources said. The family of the sixth student from Jiangxi's neighboring Hubei Province will receive their compensation later.
The stampede happened at approximately 8:30 PM last Saturday when hundreds of first-grade students at Tutang Middle School in Duchang County rushed out of their evening classes and onto a stairway.
The students, five male and one female aged between 12 and 13, died on their way to hospital. Some 39 others were injured in the stampede and 18 of them are still being treated in the Jiujiang No. 1 People's Hospital.
In October 2005 a boy was killed and 64 others pupils injured in a stampede in a primary school in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region when part of a stairway collapsed.
