China's southernmost province of Hainan launched eight community-based methadone clinics for drug addicts in seven cities between Monday and Wednesday, sources with the provincial health authorities said on Wednesday.
The seven cities included such sightseeing destination as Sanya.
Methadone therapy is regarded as one of the most effective ways to reduce drug addicts craving for stronger illicit drugs.
Ten additional methadone clinics will open next year in Hainan, the sources said.
According to the provincial drug prohibition authorities, Hainan has registered 24,900 drug addicts, some 14,000 are still abusing drugs. Ninety percent are under 35 years of age.
It is estimated that over three quarters of the 381 HIV-infected people found in the province are drug users who contracted the virus by sharing dirty needles, said Jian Liangsheng, head of the provincial health department.
Number of methadone clinics will reach 200 nationwide.
