Adjust font size:

Families of Hong Kong victims of a road accident in Egypt left for Cairo on Tuesday night to take care of their loved ones affected by the disaster.

The group of 33 families left Hong Kong on Tuesday night, following reports that 14 Hong Kong tourists were killed and 30 others injured when their bus turned over on the way to Egypt's southern Nile city of Luxor on the same day.

The trip of the 33 families was covered by the Jetour agency, which organized the group tour to Egypt.

Jetour has confirmed the 33 people's relatives were among victims of the accident and decided to keep the length of their stay in Egypt flexible, which will depend on the situation there.

The 43-member Hong Kong tourist group was on a 10-day tour in Egypt when the accident occurred, which also seriously injured the group's Hong Kong guide.

The accident, occurring on the last day of Hong Kong's Chinese New Year holidays, has raised attention of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Upon the reports, the HKSAR government decided to send two medical staffs and four immigration officers to assist the Egyptian authorities to arrange related issues.
