US Government Urged to Oppose Taiwan Bill
Adjust font size:
China Tuesday demanded the United States government clearly oppose the passage of a bill by US Congress which supports Taiwan's participation in the United Nations and other international organizations.

At a regular briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao called the passage of the bill in US Congress "a severe infringement on China's sovereignty and a wanton interference in China's internal affairs.''

"It must be pointed out that there is only one China,'' said Zhu. "As a part of China, Taiwan does not have any qualification whatever to enter any international organization where statehood is a basic requirement.''

China urged the US government to abide by its commitment and take concrete measures to stop the US Congress from interfering in China's internal affairs, said Zhu.

He also demanded the US Congress immediately stop any actions that might impair China's interests.

The US Senate passed a bill supporting Taiwan's participation in international organizations last Thursday. The same bill got approval from the House of Representatives earlier.
