US diplomatic officials left their hotel on Saturday after waiting all day for a promised third meeting with 24 American air crew detained on China's southern Hainan Island, witnesses said.
A four-vehicle motorcade carrying US defence attache Brigadier General Neal Sealock and other American diplomats sped to the Hainan provincial government office in central Haikou.
It was not immediately clear whether they were going directly to meet the crew, but one US official said the diplomats had been waiting all day for a signal the meeting was on. Diplomats had met the crew late on Tuesday night and again on Friday.
