Pearl City Fair Taps Investors

Qingyuan, a city situated alongside the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong Province, is currently holding a five-day tourism, investment and trade fair.

The event, which is set to last until the weekend, is the first such large-scale fair held in the city since 1988.

The fair is expected to help Qingyuan turn its blueprint for economic development, outlined in the 10th Five-Year Plan (2001-05), into reality, said Liang Gewen, the city's Party secretary, at the event's opening ceremony.

The city is advertising 155 projects which it hopes will attract potential investors both at home and abroad.

Most of these are related to the tourism industry, agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, fisheries, the processing industry and infrastructure schemes.

Liang said the projects are important for the city's economic development, but would also be profitable for investors.

The official said Qingyuan expects funds to be secured at the fair for these schemes.

Qingyuan vows to turn itself into the "backyard garden" and "vegetable basket" of the Pearl River Delta, and become a key base for export-oriented processing industries in Guangdong Province, he added.

Liang said the city's position next to the flourishing Pearl River Delta region, and its many tourist spots, will allow it to become a top tourist destination.

Its vast arable land and varying climate will also enable the city to become an important supplier of vegetables and animal products to the delta region.

The improving investment climate and comparatively low production costs for manufacturing will allow the city to achieve its goals, added Liang.
