A woman who used a fake passport to study abroad 17 years ago has been sentenced to six months, with a six-month reprieve, for illegally crossing the border, according to Shanghai's Pudong New Area People's Court.

The woman surnamed Bi, 38, managed to study in the United States with a fake passport in the name of a woman surnamed Yue in 1999. Bi obtained an MBA degree in the US, the court said.

Bi, a native in Jilin City of northeast China, returned to China in 2004 and settled in Shanghai. Bi used Yue's identity to study and work in the US, France, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.

“I got everything here in the name of Yue, including my house and bank accounts,” Bi told the court.

Her crime came to light when Yue applied for a passport this year but was told that one had already been issued. Bi surrendered to the police in June.
