When I was very sick, before I knew my HIV status, I almost died. My parents were so desperate that when a monk suggested that both parents should place their saliva in a ball of sticky rice and use it to suck the bad spirits out of me, they took his advice.

In truth I suspected I had HIV but I didn't say anything. I was afraid of the side-effects of treatment. So I did nothing. [©Ton/MSF]
