Story of patient in DRC

I weighed 55kg at the time. I went to the CTA and the doctor took my CD4 count: 175. He told me that this was very low, and I had to start ARVs. I refused them at first. I though they'd killed my daughter. But the doctor told me that if I didn't start the treatment, I would die.

I had to take care of my children and grandchildren. I took the ARVs to church because I was scared. I prayed that the medicine would give me back my health.

Now I take the medicine every day. There's cotrimoxazole that protects me from opportunistic infections, multivitamins that give me strength, and the ARVs. [© Denise/MSF]
