China has made initial success in solid waste pollution control and the rate of its use is rising since the inception of the law on solid waste pollution control eight years ago, Sheng Huaren, vice-chairman of the standing committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and head of an inspection team, said in his report to the NPC standing committee.
China has invested 13.1 billion yuan (US$1.58 million) in urban garbage disposal, built 147 garbage burial grounds with an added annual capacity of 19.7 million tons and 92 dangerous waste disposal centers.
In spite of this, the pollution by the solid waste is still serious as the basic facilities are very weak, he said.
